Cold Case - Budget Cuts

Well, this is disappointing. That damn recession has hit show business, too! Cold Case isn’t going to film in Philadelphia anymore. As fans of the show know, the Philly locations are like another character, giving the moody procedural a gritty reality that contrasts to the colorful flashbacks. It’s really too bad because that local color is missed when it’s gone. The shots of Miami in CSI: Miami, for instance, glamorize that program, even if they only drop them in occasionally. That’s how it was for Cold Case with Philadelphia.

Well, not anymore. In the past, the CBS show would visit the City of Brotherly Love four times a year. Then it was cut back to twice a year. Now, no more visits. The directors and producers will simply have to fake it with Los Angeles locations or back lots.

The stars aren’t happy about it either. John Finn — who plays Lt. Stillman, Lily’s boss — said, “It’s a big mistake. Philadelphia was our heart and soul. Love Park and Fishtown and all those places, you cannot recreate that anywhere.”

Jeremy Ratchford, a.k.a. Detective Nick Vera, agreed with Finn. “There’s something you can get in Philadelphia that you cannot get in Los Angeles. Like that Italian Market where the guys says, ‘Howmany, howmany, howmany bananas?’ Every major city in the States has a flavor. Our flavor is Philadelphia, and it’s a shame we’re not going back.”

Sadly, it would seem that this is the cost of getting picked up. Cold Case was on the bubble last spring. Obviously, getting renewed doesn’t mean that everything is as it was. Hopefully, the Cold Case crew will be talented enough to compensate for losing Philly.
