Cold Case TV Show is not just a show about solving crimes and getting the bad guy. It’s about dedication from police and detectives. The never give up theory of the many who want justice for the dead and peace to those who have families who are left behind with so many unanswered questions. The series was distinguished by weekly flashback sequences, showing those involved in the case at hand as they were “then” and “now.” (This technique was generously lavished on the opening episode, which was clearly inspired by the Michael Skakel murder case). Also in the cast was John Finn as Lilly’s boss and mentor, Lt. Tom Stillman. Cold Case debuted September 28, 2003.

Many of the detectives go up and beyond what is expected of them to solve a case. Sadly many of the cases go cold. Especially some older case’s where modern day technology wasn’t available. But the never give up attitude bring many of these case back to life as we become more advanced in our ability to solve crimes through forensics. Because of the hard work from these people, even if it takes 20 years, families finally get answers to questions that lay in the back of their minds and haunt them. Cold Case Files is not a drama or fictional show. It shows stories of real people and real cases. Some have finality to them and some still lay cold.

• Unlike last week’s episode of Torchwood (“Cyberwoman”) which suffered from a weak first half-hour but rebounded with a great second half-hour; this week’s episode of Torchwood was solid from beginning to end.
• The mystery of Captain Jack got a little clearer and also a little murkier in this episode. We already knew that he spent some time in the British Army during WWII; but what we didn’t know prior to this episode was that Jack had fallen in love with a woman at that time, but unfortunately had to break his promise to be with her forever. (I think the reasons that Jack left the WWII era were explained on Dr. Who, so I’m hazy on those details). We also found out in this episode that Jack spent time in the army prior to the First World War, which is when he had his first encounter with the fairies. What was he doing on a troop transport train in 1908???
• Jack’s interactions with Estelle in this episode were sweet, especially the scene at the end where she died and he admitted to Gwen that he had been Estelle’s lover (and not his father).
• Kudos to Gwen for putting two and two together and realizing that Jack was Estelle’s man in WWII. I like that Gwen is figuring things out quickly and that Torchwood isn’t playing out all these little mysteries over three or four episodes.
• The fairies targeting the little girl as their “chosen one” was disturbingly creepy, but I assumed that Jack and the team would of course find some way to save her. Needless to say I was very surprised when Jack and Co. couldn’t save her and Jack had to sacrifice the girl to the fairies at the end. I had the same reaction as Gwen and the others: “WTF, Jack?!”
• Jack’s inner turmoil in that moment, followed by the mother’s grief and then the team refusing to speak to him made for some great (albeit somewhat depressing) television moments.
• Some of the other standout moments from this ep included:
– The fairies killing the pedophile;
– Gwen freaking out to Jack after she found her apartment trashed;
– The flashbacks;
– Gwen finding the girl’s face in the old photograph; and
– Jack and Ianto’s “moment” (for lack of a better word) at the beginning of the episode when they were both working late – letting the viewers know that these two have reached some kind of truce/apology/understanding since the shattering events of the previous ep.

• I thought this was another good episode of Cold Case. Even though the cold case was only one year old (usually not my favorite eps), this one was still pretty decent.
• This wasn’t the first primetime procedural to use the rite of rumspringa (aka “Amish gone wild”) as the central plot point, but Cold Case did it pretty well. Kudos to all of the young actors who were able to portray the situation so realistically and emotionally.
• All the stuff with Nick Vera (Jeremy Ratchford) “going native” with the Amish was great. Those were some nice, subtle character moments for the guy.
• There wasn’t much development on IAD’s investigation of Scotty, but we did learn from Stillman that Scotty’s screw up is common knowledge among department brass; and that Stillman wasn’t the source of that info. Scotty was not expecting that info. (Part of me wonders if the leak is ADA Thomas (Bonnie Root), Scotty’s maybe-love-interest, whom we haven’t seen since last season’s finale.)
• Pretty decent music in this episode as well, even though it was mainly recent Top 40: Augustana, KT Tunstall (twice), Natasha Bedingfield, and Kelly Clarkson.
• I thought it was a nice touch that the victim’s sister saw the “ghost/memory” figment of the victim at the end of the episode, as opposed to Lily or someone on the squad who usually gets that moment of on-screen closure. Last night’s ep worked much better with the sister seeing the victim before tossing her bonnet and setting off on her own rumspringa.
• My one gripe with this episode would be that the final reveal of the murder was pretty lame. It just seemed kind of… I don’t know… anticlimatic I guess. Did anyone else feel that way?
• Oh, a second gripe: the rapist got away with rape in this ep. I know they kind of downplayed it, but he was never punished — and that ticked me off.

• This was another decent episode of Cold Case… one of my favorite procedurals. Even though the cold case in this episode was only ten years old, it was still a really good ep.
• Internal Affairs really has it out for Scotty. The interrogation scene with Scotty and the IAD investigator was pretty revealing. IAD knows about Scotty slipping up and telling the pedophile killer the name of his son’s murderer, leading to that near-fatal showdown on the roof (all of this happened in last season’s Offender episode). Scotty thinks that Stillman noted the incident on his record, which is how IAD knows about it; and Scotty’s now pissed at his boss.
• Also during that interrogation scene, it was a nice shot of continuity to be reminded that Scotty and Lil had developed the “hey” codeword the morning he went to check on her after her mom died. The IAD jerk tried to insinuate something else. Jack ass.
• Lilly (and the viewers) got some answers for why Stillman was such a jerk last week. He blames himself for Lilly getting shot. Well that explains it, I guess. I almost forgot that Stillman was also shot that night and that he would be battling his own demons from that standoff… especially his inability to stop it.
• Best line of the night was undoubtedly Nick to the ex-jock: “You’re a grade-D slab of jackass.”
• Funniest line of the night had to be Kat regarding the purity ring: “Veronica’s babysitter has one. It doesn’t stop her from getting busy on my couch.”
• I didn’t guess that all four students had killed the girl until the end when all of them were in the interrogation room together, then I knew; but I didn’t figure it out before that. Kudos to Cold Case for keeping me guessing.
• The ending montage was particularly moving last night, especially when Scotty went to the victim’s mother’s house who had the birthday cupcake lit and Scotty gave the mother the long-lost secret note that the daughter had written before she was killed: “I believe that God loves me for who I am.” It was a very touching ending.
• I’m usually not thrilled with the musical selections from the more-recent cold cases (i.e., those set in the 80’s or 90’s), but they chose some pretty good songs last night. I can remember liking all of them when they first came out in the late 90’s: Everclear (I Will Buy You a New Life), Marcie Playground (Sex and Candy), Dishwalla (Tell Me All Your Thoughts on God), Natalie Imbruglia (Torn), Semisonic (Closing Time), and The Goo Goo Dolls (Black Balloon)
• If I had one gripe about last night’s episode it would be that I found the killing scene to be particularly gruesome again (for the second week in a row)… too reminiscent of the grisly Criminal Minds than I’m used to for this show.
